Why Self-Care Is So Important

Written by K. Reese; Associate Director of Rediscovering You

In previous blogs we have talked about self-love (self-compassion) and ways to improve your mental health. For this post, I wanted to dig deeper into why it is so important to take the time for you.

The first point I want to convey is; IT IS NOT SELFISH to take time for self-care. How are you going to take care of everything else (job, kids/family, friends), if you don’t take care of yourself? Life is busy! No denying that fact. It’s so easy to put ourselves on the back burner. I want to challenge you to look at self-care as a way to replenish your energy so you can focus on all your other tasks.

So, why is self-care so important? It affects your whole being; physical, emotional and mental. In my opinion, the number one reason self-care is so important is that it can help you cope with stressful situations as they arise. When you are practicing self-care, you are practicing ways to clear your mind and find calm (meditation, journaling, running, etc.). This will come in handy in stressful situations. I picture it as going from a fight or flight response (without self-care), to a pause and plan response (with self-care).

Some other reasons self-care is so important include; increase in one’s self-confidence and self-esteem, better work-life balance, and improved physical health. Who wouldn’t want all those benefits?!

There is no better time than the present to start your own self-care routine. Rediscovering You has put together self-care kits just for you! Visit our store to pre-order your kit, or kits for someone you love, by going to our website.

You can also check out tips, tools, and strategies for self-care under the Self-Care tab. “In a society that says, ‘Put yourself last,’ self-love and self-acceptance is almost revolutionary,” said Brené Brown, author and research professor at The University of Houston.
